I do know one thing for a fact about my big boy Ruffin, he does not stay out late partying. But in spite of appearing like he came home drunk he does have a strange habit of seemingly falling off his bed or any other bed he happens to sleep on. I know he does come into my bedroom and plop himself down on his fancy bed. I hear him at night, but he gets up and moves around a lot. Sometimes I find him wrapped around the toilet bowl sound asleep. I told the Vet about it and he said its because Ruff probably likes to sleep on a cold floor, even though no one else does. That makes sense in the summertime but not all year round. I also know he curls up and sleeps next to my bed on the hardwood floor because I have had to tip-toe over him in the middle of the night. One does not want to accidentally step on a sleeping Rottweiler.
But then there is this:
I posted the picture on the left a few days ago and then I spotted Ruff sleeping on Bessie's bed that I moved from my den into the family room. And once again I have to admit, of all the seven Rottweilers who I have lived with, Ruff is the only one who sleeps like this. Other than this, old man Axl will sleep for hours on the couch but won't go near a dog bed on the floor. And when Axl lays down it sounds like dropping a sack of potatoes on the floor.Gotta love 'em.
Our first Rottie used to sleep in the bathroom, curled around the toilet. I thought it was the strangest thing. They definitely do not like to be too warm.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely don't like to be too warm. The pads on their feet are like radiators and expel their body heat. I know, my girl Bess sleeps with her paws against me. And they absolutely love the cold weather. Going outside and breathing the cold air seems to invigorate them. And again, young Bess runs around almost uncontrollably in the cold.
DeleteMy Toby slept the same way... Yes, rotties don't like to be too warm, but in this case I think it's the angle that he's laying... he's laying on the back half of his side... in other words he's laying with his weight on his ribs between his spine and the roundest part of his barrel. See how the line down his belly is almost pointing up or at least at 45-degrees? If it was just temperature, you'd see him laying anywhere, but because you mentioned he does this right by the bed and I am assuming always with his feet on the bed... it's the angle he's wanting.
ReplyDeleteWow, and thank you for the detailed explanation. It never occurred to me that Ruff was sleeping like that on purpose. He seems to start off the night sleeping on his bed then seems to roll over and fall off it or slide down onto the floor.
